Abstract

In course of the British rule in India especially from the time of 1900s, the revolutionary struggle played a vital role in gaining freedom from the British. In Bengal, organisations such as Calcutta Anushilan Samiti, Atmannati Samiti and Chhattra Bhandar Mess that came in existence prior to the partition gave head start to the revolutionary work in Bengal and the country. Cases such as Alipore Case, Howrah case, Khulna Jessore case, Dacca Conspiracy case etc. were some of the precedent revolutionary activities that were carried on as the call against 1905-partition. And this continued throughout swadeshi movement and then on to the non-cooperation and civil disobedience movement despite the later following the method of ‘non-violence’. The growing sense of nationalism led people across the line including students join hands with voluntary groups to carry out revolutionary activism throughout Bengal during this phase. The theme of the topic builds on this particular aspect and tries to project the happenings in particular to undivided northern Bengal that mostly goes unchecked. Revolutionary work has been thoroughly worked out by historians and scholars, however, mostly are related to the happenings in Calcutta or Dacca or Chittagong. So, the particular paper presents on the happenings concerning northern Bengal and to form an overall picture of spread and impact of revolutionary work in the marked region.
