Abstract

The ultimate centre of Tagore’s work in rural reconstruction was Sriniketan. His attempt to improve the condition of the rural populace, the majority of whom were peasants, took its final shape here. The thinker and poet Rabindranath Tagore dedicated significant effort to rural reconstruction in Sriniketan after Shilaidaha and Patisar. His vision spanned three distinct phases: first, while managing family estates in the 1890s; second, advocating a national program of Constructive Swadeshi from 1903 to 1908, and finally, establishing Sriniketan in the 1920s. Tagore’s approach emphasised healing society from within, fostering cooperation, and uplifting spirits. Tagore's certain initiatives, such as educating villagers in self-reliance and bringing ‘life to its fullness’ by improving the material and spiritual conditions of rural life. Tagore believed villages could progress through scientific examination and experimentation, guiding mental and social advancement for all Indians. Tagore’s legacy lies in his literary works and tireless commitment to transforming rural India. This study explores various aspects of Tagore's vision of agriculture and his efforts at rural reconstruction in Sriniketan.
